Shooting Creek Lumber Company
Logs to Lumber and Shooting Creek Lumber Company are one in the same and came about when my family and I migrated to The Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina umpteen million years ago. Growing up, I just knew wood and I would get along just fine but I was raised to respect this land and not cash in on what was not mine to cash in on. I was raised to not be wasteful with a mill and think about whatever I do prior to doing it. I was raised to know and believe in the rewards of a hards days work and running a mill is about as butt kicking of a job a man can find. There is no real justification in why we beat ourselves so badly while wrestling some of these bent and twisted monsters.
Running a mill is nothing new to me but I had been infected by the "wood bug" long before I ever bought a mill. The "wood-bug" is not an insect, but an acquired discriminating taste for highly figured or uniquely grained hardwoods. Acquired by actually doing or participating in the act of custom sawing or milling hardwood timber. To cut into a log for the first time and reveal what only Mother Nature has the power to create is nothing short of astonishing. To reveal the flecks of ray or "ray flecks" of a highly figured Maple, White Oak or Sycamore to name a few is a marked moment in a young sawyers life. For revealing what is so deeply hidden and guarded in those logs is the key to feeding the woodbug.
I leave you with one bit of advice: Don't ever be afraid to drop an ugly log onto your mill deck! You may be pleasantly surprised by what you uncover. Work at it though and do not hurry. Size it up and chip away until you have found the cant or chunk within it. It will reveal itself in time but for the moment, be patient while working empathetically without expectation.
LogstoLumber.org
Logstolumber is simply our name on the web. You need to have an address that accurately reveals what you do. Therefore, to accurately define what we do, we custom saw logs to lumber and sell that lumber through Shooting Creek lumber Company as custom sawn Appallachian hardwoods and wood slabs. Custom sawing reclaimed trees is always at the heart of what we do.
